Typhoon Usagi has left 25 people dead in southern China's Guangdong province, state media reported.

National television broadcaster CCTV reported the toll in an hourly bulletin that ran at 0100 GMT.

CCTV did not say how the victims died but reported that multiple roads had been damaged and trees knocked down.

Earlier the broadcaster's website had cited a toll of at least 20 deaths.

Guangdong is in China's densely populated Pearl River Delta which includes Hong Kong, also hit by the storm meteorologists have said is the most powerful on Earth this year.

Usagi packed winds of 165 kilometres (103 miles) per hour as it hit land Sunday, according to Chinese officials.
