French President Francois Hollande was due to hold a mini-summit Thursday with African leaders in the Malian capital Bamako on the security situation in the Central African Republic, aides said.

The meeting on the sidelines of the inauguration of Malian President Ibrahmim Boubacar Keita, will bring together the heads of state of Gabon, Chad and Cameroon, the main contributors to an African Union force in the country, hit by a coup in March, aides said.

"The president wants to encourage this approach, see what they need and how to bring the issue to the United Nations," said a member of Hollande's entourage.

The idea is to "enable the force to press for a resolution from the Security Council", he added. Hollande is due attend the UN General Assembly in New York next week.
