The Associated Press has named award-winning correspondent and investigative editor John-Thor Dahlburg as its news editor for Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

The appointment was announced Wednesday by the news organization's Europe editor, Niko Price.

From a Brussels base, Dahlburg will lead AP's coverage of the three western European countries as well as the institutions based there, including the European Union, NATO and the international criminal tribunals. He will also help lead investigative reporting across Europe. He will report to Angela Charlton, the AP's Paris-based chief of bureau for France, Benelux and North Africa.

"We're looking forward to bringing John's experience driving hard-hitting investigations to a European stage," Price said in London.

Dahlburg previously worked for the AP from 1981-90 in Paris, New York, Moscow and Miami. He moved to the Los Angeles Times from 1990 to 2006, where his writing captured the collapse of the Soviet Union, the growth of the Taliban, the emergence of the euro, and conflicts from the former Yugoslavia to the Horn of Africa.

Most recently, Dahlburg was investigations editor at the South Florida Sun Sentinel, where he ran a six-member team tasked with exposing corruption, incompetence and abuses in government and private institutions. The team won the 2013 Pulitzer Prize gold medal for Public Service for using databases to document chronic and often lethal speeding by off-duty police officers in a package of stories, graphics, photos and video.

Dahlburg is the recipient of the Overseas Press Club's Hal Boyle Award, the George Polk Award, the Sigma Delta Chi Award and the Robert F. Kennedy Award, among other honors. A graduate of Washington & Lee University, Dahlburg also holds masters and doctorate degrees in law from the Universite de Toulouse in France.

A native of Orange, New Jersey, Dahlburg speaks French and Russian as well as some Spanish, Hindi and Urdu.
