Dominican Republic church officials: Vatican envoy wasn't recalled over sex abuse allegations

Catholic Church officials in the Dominican Republic say there is no evidence of any sexual abuse by the papal ambassador who was abruptly recalled from his post by the Vatican.

Two church officials tell reporters that Archbishop Josef Wesolowski was recalled by Rome before a Dominican television station aired a report that accused him of sexually abusing minors.

Manuel Ruiz and Joaquin Dominguez said Thursday the envoy was not suspended because of the allegations. The diocesan officials declined to say why the Vatican made the rare decision to remove its diplomat.

On Wednesday, the Vatican said the Polish-born prelate is being investigated but did not say why. The Dominican Republic attorney general said his office was looking into rumors of sexual abuse but had received no complaints.
