Sloviakia's Peter Sagan won the first stage of the Tour of Alberta on Wednesday to retain the overall lead in the inaugural race.

Sagan, the Cannondale rider who also won the prologue time trial Tuesday, finished the 98-mile stage in 3 hours, 22 minutes, 17 seconds. He had a 23-second lead over Rohan Dennis of Garmin Sharp in the overall standings.

BMC's Cadel Evans, the 2011 Tour de France winner, was fourth — 30 seconds behind.
