Washington outfielder Bryce Harper sat out the Nationals' game Wednesday night against Philadelphia to rest his ailing hip.

Harper will get an extra day's rest because the Nationals also are off Thursday before opening a series against Miami. Harper is batting .275 with 19 home runs and 49 RBIs in 100 games.

Manager Davey Johnson is taking extra precautions with his young star. Harper injured his left knee in May when he crashed into the fence at Dodger Stadium while chasing a fly ball. He eventually missed 31 games due to bursitis.

Johnson learned this week the 20-year-old Harper was receiving treatment on his hip. Harper told Johnson his hip was "barking" and was benched for the series finale.
