Cambodia's opposition leader to offer training in how to hold peaceful protests

Cambodia's opposition leader says he plans to hold training sessions and rehearsals to show supporters how to hold peaceful protests ahead of a mass rally planned for Sept. 7.

Sam Rainsy said Thursday he would also ask foreign experts to help with the training because the Cambodian people have little experience staging large opposition protests.

The opposition has called for the rally unless an independent committee is formed to investigate alleged irregularities in last month's election.

Official results from the July 28 polls gave Prime Minister Hun Sen's ruling party 68 seats, compared to 55 for the opposition.

The National Election Committee is expected to ratify the results Sept. 8.

Hun Sen has been in power for 28 years and shown a heavy hand in dealing with opponents.
