Suspected Islamic sect member attacks on young vigilantes kill at least 20 in north Nigeria

Residents and officials say two attacks by suspected members of a Nigerian Islamic sect have killed at least 20 members of a vigilante group that fights the sect.

A military official said Tuesday that Boko Haram insurgents crept up on six members of the group known as the Civilian Joint Task Force who were sleeping in the northeast village of Damasak and shot them Monday night. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not permitted to speak to the media.

The bodies were piled in a truck on Tuesday at a Joint Task Force headquarters in Maiduguri.

The attack came less than two days after suspected Boko Haram members, who residents say were disguised as military, stormed Bama and slit the throats of 14 young vigilantes.
