Pakistan accuses Indian troops of killing soldier in latest attack along Kashmir border

The Pakistani military says Indian troops fired across the disputed Kashmir border, killing a Pakistani soldier, the second fatality this week in exchanges between the two sides.

A military statement says "unprovoked" firing occurred around noon on Thursday in Rakhchakri sector near Rawalakot town.

An Indian army officer says Indian troops responded after receiving gunfire from Pakistani soldiers, and the exchange lasted three hours. He spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military policy.

Violence has spiked along the border in recent weeks as the two sides have accused each other of deadly attacks.

Kashmir is divided between Pakistan and India but claimed in its entirety by both. The two countries have fought two major wars over the disputed territory since they received their independence from Britain in 1947.
