Officials: Suicide car bomber kills at least 9 soldiers, wounds 11 in western Iraq

Officials say a suicide bombing in western Iraq has killed at least nine soldiers and wounded 11.

A police officer says the attacker rammed his explosives-laden fuel tanker Thursday into a military barrack in Anbar province.

A medical official confirmed the casualty figure. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to journalists.

A former insurgent stronghold, Anbar province is one of the areas where militants have intensified their attacks to undermine government efforts to increase security.

More than 3,000 people have been killed in violence over the past few months, raising fears that Iraq could see a new round of widespread sectarian bloodshed similar to that which brought the country to the edge of civil war in 2006 and 2007.
