YANGON, Myanmar – The U.N. special investigator on human rights in Myanmar says 200 angry Buddhists mobbed his car after he landed in the central Myanmar town of Meikhtila this week to study tensions between Buddhists and Muslims.
Tomas Ojea Quintana said Wednesday it was a terrifying experience that hammered home the level of tension in the region.
During his 10-day visit to the country, Quintana toured areas that have been hit by religious violence in the last year.
More than 250 people have been killed — mostly Muslims — and another 140,000 have been forced to flee their homes.
He said mobs surrounded his convoy in Meikhtila, forcing him to cut short his visit there.
Many in Myanmar have accused the U.N. envoy of favoring Muslims and ignoring the feelings of Buddhists.
