JAKARTA, Indonesia – Police say at least 16 people were killed and more a dozen others injured when a church bus returning from an outing plunged into a river in Indonesia's West Java province.
Local traffic police chief Capt. Muhammad Chaniago said the bus was carrying about 60 people from a church in northern Jakarta and was returning from an outing in the hilly resort town of Puncak when its brakes apparently malfunctioned. It hit a small car and slammed through the wall of a building before both vehicles fell up to 8 meters (26 feet) into the river in Cisarua.
Most of the dead were killed instantly. Injured people were rushed to two nearby hospitals, Chaniago said.
Road accidents are common in Indonesia due to poor safety standards and infrastructure.
