Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian and wounded two others during an operation early Tuesday to arrest a Palestinian militant in the West Bank city of Jenin, the army said.

"During the activity, shots were fired at the forces and improvised explosive devices and rocks were hurled at the security personnel, injuring two soldiers," a military spokeswoman told AFP.

"Troops responded to the live fire in order to eliminate the threat, and initial reports indicate that one Palestinian was killed and two injured," she added.

An army spokesman added that the wanted man was taken into custody, but said an earlier statement that those who took part in the violence against the soldiers had also been detained was incorrect.

Army radio said the man was believed to be an Islamic Jihad activist, Bassam Saadi.

The two soldiers were lightly injured by stones, it added.
