An Afghan police official says three suicide bombers have tried to attack the Indian consulate in the eastern city of Jalalabad but were killed before they got to the building.
Masum Khan Hashimi, who is deputy police chief of Nangarhar province, said there were nonetheless numerous civilian casualties from Saturday's attack because one of the bombers blew up a car bomb on the busy street where the Indian consulate is located.
Hashimi did not know if there were dead among the casualties.
In New Delhi, India's External Affairs Ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin says that all Indian officials in the consulate are safe.
The Taliban denied carrying out the attack in a text message to the media.
Indian officials and buildings in Afghanistan have been targeted by militants in past years.
