British Gas is planning to provide customers with free power on Saturdays in an effort to reduce demand at peaks times, the BBC reported.

They hope the scheme, which would be available to its one million customers who have smart meters, will encourage them to use more energy at weekends and less during the week, when demand from industry peaks.

The scheme is already being piloted and could be online next year, reported the BBC.

British Gas parent company, Centrica, already offers the scheme to customers in the United States.
