Bahrain-born banker shot to death in Malaysia, sparks concerns of worsening crime

Police say a Bahrain-born banker who founded Malaysia's fifth largest bank has been shot to death in Kuala Lumpur.

The killing of Hussain Ahmad Najadi, 75, marked the third attack on high-profile figures in the past few months and sparked fears that crime is worsening. A senior customs official was gunned down in April while an anti-crime activist is fighting for his life after being shot last week by unknown assailants.

City police official Khairi Ahrasa says a gunman fired shots Monday at Najadi and his wife in a parking lot. He said Tuesday that Najadi died on the spot, while his wife suffered serious injuries.

Opposition lawmaker Lim Kit Siang said the killings threatened to damage Malaysia's reputation and showed crime is getting worse.
