THE HAGUE, Netherlands – The International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor says she "will not hesitate to investigate" the slayings last week of seven United Nations peacekeepers in Darfur if Sudan fails to do so.
Fatou Bensouda on Friday condemned the July 13 killings of seven Tanzanian peacekeepers and wounding of 17 more military and police personnel from the joint African Union-UN force in Sudan's troubled western region.
U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said earlier this week that the peacekeepers were ambushed while on a routine patrol and were outnumbered four-to-one. Nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The ICC has indicted several suspects, including Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, for their alleged roles in deadly violence in Darfur.
