Militants in Egypt's Sinai on Tuesday shelled a police base with mortar rounds and fired heavy machine guns in an ongoing attack, security officials told AFP.

The militants opened fire on the base belonging to the Central Security Forces near the border town of Rafah, amid a surge of violence since last week's ouster of president Mohamed Morsi.
