London's main stock market climbed at the start of trading on Monday, the start of a key week for the region's main central banks with the Bank of England welcoming a new governor and holding a policy meeting.

The benchmark FTSE 100 index added 0.81 percent in opening trades to 6,265.89 points compared with Friday's close.

Elsewhere in Europe Frankfurt's DAX 30 grew 0.51 percent to 8,000 points and in Paris the CAC 40 advanced by 0.62 percent in value to stand at 3,763.17.

Canadian Mark Carney begins his job as governor of the Bank of England on Monday, joining an institution divided on whether to pump out more cash stimulus to boost Britain's fragile economic recovery.

Carney, who made his name as head of the Bank of Canada where he helped to guide the nation's economy through the global financial crisis relatively unscathed, is replacing Mervyn King who led the BoE since 2003.

The Bank of England and European Central Bank are meanwhile scheduled to announce their latest policy decisions on interest rates on Thursday.
