Secretary of State Kerry plunges back into Mideast peace process with fifth trip to region

AMMAN, Jordan – Secretary of State John Kerry is plunging back into the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict, using Amman, Jordan, as a base for talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

It is Kerry's fifth visit to the region to try to restart peace talks.

He left Amman Thursday evening to drive to Jerusalem to dine with Netanyahu. A Jordanian military helicopter flew over his convoy during the trip. He is to have lunch with Abbas on Friday in Amman.

Earlier Thursday, Kerry talked about the crisis in Syria and the Mideast peace process with Jordan's King Abdullah II.

The Royal Palace says Abdullah told Kerry he's working to bridge the gaps between the two sides, but warned that unilateral actions by Israel undermine chances for peace.
