In a match between two promising Americans, 17th-seeded Sloane Stephens beat Jamie Hampton 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of Wimbledon on Monday, while Christina McHale topped Alexa Glatch 6-4, 6-4 in another all-American matchup.

Stephens is hoping for another good showing at a Grand Slam, after beating Serena Williams en route to the semifinals at the Australian Open and making the fourth round at Roland Garros.

Last week, Hampton made her first career final, losing to Elena Vesnina in Eastbourne.

Both American men in action on Monday — 18th-seeded John Isner and unseeded Rajeev Ram — advanced.

Five other American women played Monday and all lost: 26th-seeded Varvara Lepchenko, CoCo Vandeweghe, Melanie Oudin, Vania King and Lauren Davis. All but Davis went three sets.
