NATO chief: alliance to send expert team to Libya to assess needs, no troop deployment planned

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen says the alliance will send an expert mission to Libya to assess their needs as they face a flow of insurgents from Mali.

Security experts worry that the al-Qaida linked militants — pushed out of Mali after French military intervention — may be trying to establish a safe haven in Libya.

Rasmussen said ahead of Tuesday's opening session of a meeting of NATO defense ministers that NATO will not deploy troops in the north African nation, and any training could take place outside the country.

The decision comes on the heels of requests from Libyan leaders for help from NATO, the U.S. and other nations.
