Death toll in Nigeria police attack by militia rises to 30 as president ends foreign trip

The death toll in an attack on police in central Nigeria by an ethnic militia has risen to at least 30 killed, as the nation's president rushed home from an overseas trip.

The state-run Nigerian Television Authority and the New Agency of Nigeria said Thursday that 30 officers were killed in the attack Tuesday in Nasarawa state. State police commissioner Abayomi Akeremale did not respond to requests for comment Thursday.

Akeremale previously blamed the killings on an ethnic militia that was forcing locals to take loyalty oaths.

A government statement Thursday said that President Goodluck Jonathan had canceled the remainder of his overseas trip to South Africa and Namibia to return home "to personally oversee efforts by national security agencies to contain the fresh challenges to national security."
