Official says Afghan policeman killed in border clash, Pakistan says it fired at insurgents

An Afghan security official says a border policeman has been killed in what appears to have been an exchange of fire with Pakistani troops along the boundary between the two nations.

Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi said on Thursday that Pakistani forces fired artillery rounds late Wednesday at Afghan border police in the Goshta district of eastern Nangarhar provice.

He says that in an ensuing five-hour firefight, an Afghan border policeman was killed.

But a Pakistani military official says the exchange involved Afghan militants firing at Pakistani border forces. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military policy.

Ties between Afghanistan and Pakistan have been severely strained recently. The area of the latest shooting has seen acrimonious exchanges between the two sides over the border's demarcation.
