FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Police are investigating a carry-on containing a piece of pottery suspected of containing pieces of a human skull and teeth.
At around 3 p.m. Wednesday, Broward Sheriff's Office deputies were advised by TSA agents of a sealed piece of pottery in a carry-on that broke open, containing dirt, rocks and what appeared to be pieces of skull and teeth.
Two female travelers were headed to Baltimore on an AirTran flight with the items when the discovery was made at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Wednesday. There was also a second, sealed pot that remained intact.
The women are Santeria priestesses and had gone to Cuba for religious training. They told deputies that they visited Cuba earlier in the week and purchased the two clay pots for protection, but didn't realize there were human bones in them.
Passengers were left stunned. "Oh, wow, that's absolutely terrible. They shouldn't bring anything like that," said one passenger.
Back in 2006, a woman tried to smuggle a skull into Fort Lauderdale on her way back from Haiti. And at Miami International Airport, a man had python and tortoise links in his pants.
Last week at Miami, a lighter in the shape of a grenade caused the evacuation of one concourse at the airport.
The remains were taken to the medical examiner's Office. The women were given the all clear to continue their flight back to Baltimore.
They are not facing any charges.
