HAVANA – A leading Cuban cultural official says he has been demoted after publishing an opinion piece in the New York Times that criticized "blatant racism" on the island.
Roberto Zurbano is refusing to speculate on whether his demotion from publishing director at the Casa de las Americas cultural institute to a lesser role as an analyst was directly linked to the article.
But he says he is angry over his experience with the Times. He accuses the paper of "manipulations" of his copy, "inaccuracies in translation" and "ethical violations."
The Times is standing by its handling of the article. It said late Friday that it went through multiple drafts with Zurbano and he signed off on the final version.
Cuban government officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
