Police say a marine private has been abducted and shot dead in Thailand's insurgency-plagued south.
Police Lt. Ratchasit Luelan says eight masked men wearing military-style outfits kidnapped 24-year-old Ma-ila Tohlu from his house in Narathiwat's Rue So district on Monday night.
He said Wednesday that the marine's body was found behind a mosque in Pattani province Tuesday night. Authorities said he was blindfolded and shot in the head while his hands were tied.
Marine Cmdr. Thammanoon Wanna said the motive for the killing was not clear.
More than 5,000 people have been killed in Thailand's three southernmost provinces since an Islamist insurgency erupted in 2004.
