A 22-year-old aspiring model reportedly received breast implants courtesy of British taxpayers after doctors agreed her flat chest was causing her emotional distress.
The National Health Service, or NHS, England's publicly funded health care system, footed the bill for Josie Cunningham's breast augmentation surgery in January after the woman complained to doctors her lack of assets was "ruining her life," according to the Telegraph.
Cunningham's doctor "referred me for the operation because I wasn't just flat-chested -- I didn't have any boobs whatsoever," she told The Sun newspaper. "I lived in terror of ever being seen in a bikini and could never set foot outside without a padded bra."
Cunningham's breasts reportedly were enlarged from a size 32A to a 36DD.
The surgery, which cost more than $7,000, drew criticism from those who argue the taxpayer-funded system should be helping people with "serious medical needs."
"This is a waste of NHS cash, and taxpayers will be stunned that they have been landed with the bill," said Matthew Sinclair of the TaxPayers' Alliance. "NHS bosses must not allow the system to be manipulated by people wanting cosmetic surgery merely to enhance their career prospects.
