ANKARA, Turkey – A party official says a group of Kurdish legislators has traveled to a prison island off Istanbul to confer with rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan on efforts to end the decades-old bloody conflict.
Ocalan, who is serving a life sentence, is widely expected to declare a cease-fire this week to coincide with a March 21 spring festival celebrated by Kurds.
A Peace and Democracy Party official says three party legislators are meeting with Ocalan on Monday. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to publicly discuss details of the peace efforts.
The government has acknowledged holding talks with Ocalan with the aim of persuading the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, to disarm. The talks reportedly foresee a cease-fire and the rebels' retreat from Turkey.
