Chinese activist's brother says he is under surveillance, son was beaten in police detention

Relatives of a Chinese activist who made a daring escape from house arrest nearly a year ago say they remain under surveillance and their son was beaten while in police detention.

Blind legal activist Chen Guangcheng fled from his rural village to the U.S. Embassy in Beijing last April, embarrassing China's government and setting off a diplomatic crisis with the United States. China subsequently allowed him to leave for New York to study law.

Chen's nephew was convicted in November of attacking officials who stormed his house to search for his uncle. His father, Chen Guangfu, said Wednesday that his son told him during a recent jail visit that he was beaten by police at a detention center and pressured not to challenge his conviction.
