Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry says 9 men are dead in mine blast in Russia's north

Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry says nine men have died and eight are missing in a blast at a coal mine in Russia's northern mining region.

The ministry said in a statement posted on its website that rescue teams are searching for the missing men at at the Vorkutinskaya mine in the Komi region. The blast happened on Monday.

Deadly accidents at coal mines are frequent in Russia because of negligence and lax safety regulations.
