EU foreign policy chief confident that talks on Iran's nuclear program will resume soon

The European Union's top foreign policy official says she's confident negotiations on Iran's nuclear program will resume soon.

Catherine Ashton made the comment Thursday on her way into a meeting of EU foreign ministers. Last week, her spokesman suggested Iran was willfully delaying new nuclear talks with six world powers by not agreeing to a venue and setting new preconditions for the negotiations.

Asked how, if the Iranians would not even engage in talks, international negotiators would persuade the country to give up its nuclear program, Ashton replied, "I am confident there will be a meeting soon." Many international officials fear Iran is developing nuclear weapons. Iran says its program is for peaceful purposes.

The 27 EU foreign ministers will also take stock of developments in Mali, Syria and Egypt.
