Police say bomb kills 2 people in Pakistani port city of Karachi

Police and hospital officials say a bomb has exploded near a building under construction in Pakistan's port city of Karachi, killing two people.

Salim Memon, a doctor at city's main government hospital, said they received two bodies after the blast.

Police spokesman Imran Shaukat said the motive behind Wednesday's attack in the Sohrab Goth neighborhood of Karachi was not known. Karachi is Pakistan's largest city.

He said officers found an abandoned taxi near the scene, and bomb disposal experts were dispatched to check whether a second bomb was hidden in it.

Karachi is the capital of southern Sindh province, and it has been the scene of scores of such attacks.

It has a long history of political, sectarian and ethnic strife, which has been on the rise in recent years.
