British man gets 6 years for receiving drugs from grandmother sentenced to death in Indonesia

A British man was sentenced to six years in prison for allegedly receiving cocaine in Indonesia from a British grandmother who was sentenced to death last week.

Julian Anthony Ponder was convicted for his role as an accomplice to 56-year-old Lindsay June Sandiford. She was sentenced Jan. 22 to death by firing squad for smuggling cocaine worth $2.5 million in her suitcase onto the resort island of Bali.

Presiding Judge Gunawan Tri Budiono said Ponder was found guilty of possessing narcotics and also fined 1 billion rupiah (US$102,500).

Two other British citizens and an Indian have also been convicted and sentenced to prison in connection with the bust.

Indonesia, like many Asian countries, is very strict on drug crimes.
