Police say that four climbers were killed after they were caught up in an avalanche in the Scottish Highlands.

They were part of a group of six climbers -- three men and three women -- who were at Glencoe, one of Scotland's best-known glens, when a snow slope broke away.

The BBC reported that five of the climbers were swept down the mountain and engulfed by ice and snow.

One man managed to escape and call emergency services. A woman has been seriously injured in the accident on Saturday.

Like much of Britain, Scotland has been battered by heavy snow and strong winds in the past few days.
