A landslide has killed at least 10 people and buried dozens of others in the steep, snow-dusted mountains of southern China.

The county government reported that the landslide smothered 16 homes in Zhaojiagou village in Yunnan province Friday morning and that more than 40 people were missing. Photos posted on the province's official news site showed rescue crews in orange jumpsuits using construction machinery to sift through massive piles of mud and earth.

The state-run Yunnan Net says rescuers have recovered 10 bodies.

Reports did not say what triggered the landslide, but they occur periodically in the region, which is prone to earthquakes and heavy rains.
