Officials say a prosecutor and six others have been found slain in northeastern Guatemala near the Mexican border in a crime apparently committed by drug traffickers.

Federal prosecutor Irma Yolanda Olivares was found dead Sunday along with a social services agency official and two other unidentified people in a sport-utility vehicle. They were on a highway near the city of La Mesilla, where the four had attended the inauguration of a hotel.

The sub-secretary of the Attorney General's Office said three other homicide victims were found in a second sport-utility vehicle near the first one.

He said a preliminary investigation indicated the crime was linked to drug cartels who have established a heavy presence along the Mexican border.
