Tunisia's president says the government should apologize for the violence that has injured hundreds in the town of Siliana after youths clashed with police for a fourth day, throwing stones and firebombs.
Up to 10,000 people marched Friday to demand more jobs, government investment and the resignation of the local governor, but the protest degenerated into clashes with police. Still, the confrontation was far less serious than a day earlier, when the army was brought in to quell protests.
Later Friday, army trucks were seen arriving in Siliana.
The local hospital says more than 300 people have been injured after days of clashes.
President Moncef Marzouki expressed fear that the violence could spread. The Tunisian revolution last year was born in a neglected town like Siliana.
