Mauritania's President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz left Nouachott Friday, saying he was going back to France for "planned medical tests," less than a week after returning to Mauritania from Paris.
Aziz was evacuated to France on Oct. 14 after being accidentally shot by one of his own soldiers in a "friendly fire" incident that remains murky.
He initially downplayed the injury saying it was minor and invited reporters to interview him in his hospital bed. With each passing week, speculation on his health mounted. After five weeks away, Aziz finally returned last Saturday. He was only in the country for six days before announcing late Thursday on state TV that he was going back to see his French doctor for "planned tests" and will be away for another 10 days.
