JAYAPURA, Indonesia – Three Indonesian policemen have been killed and another is missing after dozens of gunmen stormed a remote police station in the restive province of Papua.
Papua police spokesman Gede Sumerta Jaya said about 50 unidentified gunmen attacked Pirime police station in the district of Lanny Jaya early Tuesday.
Jaya said the gunmen grabbed several weapons before torching the station and fleeing into the jungle.
The attack occurred ahead of the anniversary of the Free Papua Movement. It declared independence from Dutch colonial rule on Dec. 1, 1961. But that was rejected by the Dutch and later by Indonesia.
Papua on the western half of New Guinea was incorporated into Indonesia in 1969, but a small separatist group has battled for independence ever since.
