Witness: 4 die in a religious conflict in north Nigeria days after deadly riots elsewhere

Nigerian police say members of a largely Muslim community have turned against its Christian minority after a trader was accused of insulting the Prophet Muhammad.

Kano state police chief Ibrahim Idris said nobody died in Thursday's violence in a town about 30 miles (50 kilometers) from Nigeria's largest northern city of Kano. But resident Sadiq Ahmed said he saw four dead bodies outside Christian-owned shops and a burned down church.

Idris, who believes the trader was misunderstood, says the situation is now calm. The violence comes days after a Christian vigilante group killed a Muslim in a central Nigerian town, sparking riots that left 10 people dead.

Religious conflicts have been on the rise despite years of relatively peaceful coexistence between Nigeria's Muslim and Christian communities.
