PODGORICA, Montenegro – Montenegro's president has asked ruling party leader Milo Djukanovic to become prime minister, paving the way for the formal return to power of the long-serving politician.
President Filip Vujanovic announced the appointment Friday after Djukanovic's candidacy was put forward by his Democratic Party of Socialists — the winner of last month's parliamentary elections.
Djukanovic already has served in the past both as president and prime minister since becoming the youngest head of government in Europe at the age of 29 in 1991. More recently he served as party leader after handing the premier's post to a close associate in 2010.
The DPS will have to form a ruling coalition with other parties at a time when Montenegro faces an economic crisis and crucial European Union membership talks.
