Authorities in a Mexican state adjoining Mexico City say they are questioning 23 police officers who worked in the capital's suburbs about alleged ties to organized crime.

Officials in the state of Mexico say 1,400 state police officers were sent to the working-class suburbs of Chalco and Valle de Chalco to detain the officers. State police say the officers were detained Thursday without incident.

Mexico's federal government has acknowledged that corruption permeates the country's low-paid police forces and has pushed for the purging of corrupt officers.

In northern Mexico on Thursday, authorities in the state of Coahuila detained a purported member of the Zetas drug cartel suspected in the killing of a former governor's son. Authorities allege Carlos Flores killed Eduardo Moreira with the help of corrupt police officers.
