Could Take Weeks Before NYC Subway Service Up
Hurricane Sandy slammed the nation's largest mass transit system.
The aftermath of Hurricane Sandy continues to be felt along roads, bridges, tunnels and airports in the tristate region.
Flooding is extensive in some areas and it will take several days to fully recede.
Limited LIRR and Metro-North service begins Wednesday at 2 p.m.
Limited subway service resumes Thursday. *No subway service below 34th St. Three out of seven tunnels that were flooded have been pumped. *Service will be supplemented by a bus bridge from Brooklyn to Manhattan.
All bridges in New York City are open.
The Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, Holland Tunnel and Queens Midtown Tunnel remain closed due to flooding.
PATH service remains suspended.
Bus service is operating on a full weekday schedule. No fares will be charged on the buses on Wednesday.
Access-A-Ride is offering limited service.
Bee Line and Paratransit service restored.
NY Waterway limited service.
Alternate side of the street parking and meter regulations remain suspended through Wednesday.
John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark-Liberty International Airport are open.
LaGuardia and Teterboro airports remain closed Wednesday.
Stewart International Airport is open.
Ride sharing in cabs and livery cars is permitted (riders should check for TLC license plates on livery vehicles)
New York City subways and buses started phasing out service at 7 p.m. Sunday.
Metro-North Railroad and the Long Island Rail Road suspended service at 7 p.m. Sunday.
The city's mass transit system is the nation's largest. The subway alone has a daily ridership of more than 5 million.
NJ Transit, PATH and Amtrak also shut down service in the region.
The entire lengthy of the Garden State Parkway reopened Tuesday morning.
A 129-mile stretch was closed in both directions from Woodbridge to the southern terminus because of flooding caused by Sandy.
Gov. Chris Christie has tweeted that motorists shouldn't drive unless absolutely necessary because 200 other state roads remain closed.
The travel ban on trucks and all non-emergency vehicles in Connecticut was lifted on Tuesday.
