Suspect killed in shootout during broad anti-terrorism sweep in France

A police union official says anti-terrorism forces have raided several cities across France, and a suspect was killed in a shootout with police.

Mohamed Douhane told the television network BFM that the suspect in the eastern city of Strasbourg opened fire when police arrived and they returned fire, killing him. He said no officers were hurt, thanks to bulletproof vests.

Douhane would not comment Saturday on reports that the sweep in several cities is linked to the firebombing of a kosher grocery store on the outskirts of Paris in September, saying the operation is ongoing and sensitive. But he did say several cities, including in the south of France and in Paris, were involved.
