Iraqi officials say a car bomb has killed one mourner and wounded 15 other people when it exploded near a funeral procession south of Baghdad.

Police said the Sunday evening attack happened in the village of al-Hamza, outside the mostly Shiite Muslim city of Hillah.

Authorities quickly sealed off the area and began a search for the attackers. Hillah is located about 60 miles (95 kilometers) south of Baghdad.

It was not clear if the death toll would rise.

Hospital officials in Hillah confirmed the casualties.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release the information.
