A former News International security guard has been charged with conspiring to hide evidence of phone hacking, British authorities said Wednesday.
Lee Sandell is the sixth defendant to be charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
Rebekah Brooks, the former chief of Rupert Murdoch's News International, and her racehorse-trainer husband Charlie also face charges in the phone hacking scandal that engulfed the News of the World tabloid and has since spread to other U.K. papers.
U.K. prosecutors said that Sandell allegedly conspired in July 2011 with Brooks; her husband; her former personal assistant Cheryl Carter; head of security at News International Mark Hanna; Brooks's chauffeur, Paul Edwards; and security consultant Daryl Jorsling to conceal documents, computers and electronic devices from police investigating phone hacking and corruption allegations relating to the News of the World and The Sun newspapers.
Scotland Yard confirmed that Sandell, from Surrey, was charged when he visited Sutton Police Station on Wednesday.
Sandell will appear at London's Westminster Magistrates' court on Thursday, prosecutors added.
News International — Murdoch's U.K. newspaper arm — declined to comment.
