Mexico party demands campaign probe on leftist

Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, whose candidate apparently won the July 1 presidential election, is accusing the second-place candidate of receiving illicit funds months before he started campaigning.

The charges echo similar allegations made against the PRI's candidate, Enrique Pena Nieto, by his leftist rival Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who is calling for the election result that placed him in second to be annulled.

PRI president Joaquin Coldwell said Monday that his party has information that a civil association linked to Lopez Obrador funneled at least $89 million from the budgets of several states governed by the Democratic Revolution Party into his campaign.

Coldwell demanded electoral authorities investigate.

Lopez Obrador had not yet responded to the charges as of late Monday night.
