CALGARY, Alberta – A spokesman for the Calgary Stampede, an annual rodeo in western Canada, says three horses were killed and another is injured after a crash during wagon races.
The accident occurred on the backstretch during Thursday evening's derby, where teams of four horses pull wagons at full speed. Each of the four wagons is accompanied by two cowboys on horseback.
Stampede spokesman Doug Fraser said Friday that one horse fell while pulling a wagon in the fourth heat, causing an accident involving all four of the wagon's horses and one cowboy horse.
Fraser says the collapsed horse died during the accident, while two of the fallen horses were euthanized due to the severity of their injuries. The fourth horse is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
