Ex-police general surrenders in Colombia

A onetime chief of security under former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe has surrendered to U.S. authorities in Colombia and been flown to the United States to face drug trafficking charges.

Colombia's police director says retired police general Mauricio Santoyo handed himself over to U.S. agents and left the country Tuesday morning.

Police director Jose Roberto Leon has not released other details or revealed Santoyo's destination.

A May indictment in eastern Virginia charges Santoyo with conspiracy to export cocaine for allegedly betraying international counter-narcotics operations from 2002 to 2008. He is alleged to have received at least $5 million in return.

Santoyo was Uribe's security chief from 2002 to 2005.
